Brain cancer is one of the malignant diseases that has been the chief concern of the medical practioners. However all brain cancers are not malignant in nature. There are certain types of brain cancer that can be cured if diagnosed in proper time.

There is less possibility of brain cancer if the patient has benign brain tumor since these types of tumors are not formed of any cancer cells. If detected in early stages these types of tumors can be cured and there is hardly any possibility of recurrence. The benign brain tumors can effect certain sensative portions of brain.
These benign brain tumors or primary brain tumors as they are sometimes called can be categorically divided on the basis of types of tissues in which the tumor usually originates.

Gliomas is the most common type of brain tumor which originates in the glial tissue. There are certain types of gliomas like astrocytomas, ependymomas, oligodendrogliomas and brain stem gliomas. The primary brain tumors that do not originate in the glial tissue are medulloblastomas, meningiomas, germ cell tumors, pineal region tumors and craniopharyngiomas.

Brain tumors which have cancer cells and are malignant in nature results in brain cancer. These types of tumors increase rapidly and develop roots which may affect the tissues and the neighbouring area of the brain.

Metastatic brain cancer occurs from the cancer which has its origin in some other parts of the body but has slowly spread to the brain. Brain sacroma and primary CNS lymphoma can also be responsible for brain cancer. If the cancer first occurs in brain and then slowly spread in the brain then these types of disease are called metastatic lung cancer.

Sometimes cancer or malignant tumors in the spinal cord can result in brain cancer.Sometimes the tumors in the spinal cord have a tendency to push against the nerves present in the spinal cord. This may spread towards the brain. This type of brain cancer can be life threatening if proper attention is not given in time.

Some doctors have a tendency to categorise the brain tumors according to grades. These grades ususally vary from grade one to grade four. The grades are uaually determined according to the way the cells appear when examined under the microscope. If the cells belong to the higher grades then they have an abnormal appearance and tend to multiply quickly. These higher grade tumors are mostly malignant in natute and is one of the common factors responsible for brain cancer.
